Mount Cook is the highest peak in New Zealand located on the west-central South Island in Mount Cook National Park. The mountain is always adorned with snow as it reaches a height of approximately 12,300 feet.
Around the area of Mount Cook in the Mount Cook National Park of New Zealand there are twenty other peaks that climb to heights of about 10,000 feet but they are still about 2,000 feet lower than Mount Cook. Back in 1991, there was a landslide that took down about 30 feet of the mountain and decreased its height by that much.
Mountain climbers that visit the Mount Cook National Park find this mountain to be a challenge as the Tasman and Hooker Glaciers flow down the sides of mountain. Year after year, there have been more visitors that come to this area to view the great peak of Mount Cook.
You do not have to be a mountain climber to visit Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand, there are easier walks that take you along some beautiful scenic spots. Huts throughout the park are mostly for the mountain climbers as they are fairly difficult to reach but the Mount Cook Village has lodges, campsites and luxury hotels for those who like to stay nearer to sea level.
