Union Station, on Front Street, in the City of Toronto, Ontario in Canada is the busiest VIA railway station in Canada, as well as being the main terminal for the GO Transit commuter system and the TCC subway. Therefore, this 1927 Beaux Arts designed transportation terminal is the ideal backdrop for the Monument to Multiculturalism.
Presented to Toronto for the city's 150th birthday by the National Congress of Italian Canadians, it is recognition for the many immigrants who have been welcomed into this friendly Ontario city. Almost 10% of Toronto's population are of Italian descent. There are around 2.5 million people in Toronto, with 140 different languages...
... and dialects, and 30% speak a language besides French or English.
Created by Francesco Pirelli, the beautiful Monument to Multiculturalism is an intricate yet delicate work of art depicting a stylized world connected to a human form surrounded by doves. There are four other identical statues by Pirelli, in Sydney, Australia, Sarajevo, Bosnia, Changchun, China and Buffalo City, South Africa. It would be interesting to know how many busy commuters in Toronto stop, once in a while, to look at the monument and think about its message.
