Information about the "Mining Machinery White Island" photograph:

White Island is an active volcano situated in the Bay of Plenty on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand where tourists visit on a regular basis to see the steaming crater and explore the old sulphur mining machinery. Mining began on White Island in the middle of the 1800's, 1898-1901 and again in 1913-1914 where many people tried their luck at mining sulphur.

These mining attempts were finished in September of 1914 as some of the edge of the western crater collapsed and a mudflow took the lives of ten of the workers. None of the bodies were recovered and it was like these men just dropped off the face of the earth.

Nine years later in 1923, mining on White Island once again began but this time they built their huts on the flat land. Each day was a journey as they had to lower boats into the water and make their way around to the mining grounds but rough seas could sometimes make the trek difficult. Once enough sulphur was collected, small rail trucks were used to send the finds to the factory on White Island.

The sulphur mining ended in the 1930's due to the lack of sulphur but mining continued with the crushing of the rock for fertilizer. This turned out to be a lost cause and the mining machinery was left abandoned on the island.

When touring to this active volcano known as White Island, do not miss out on exploring the remnants of the mining machinery. Each year that passes this machinery gets more corroded due to the sulphuric gasses formed by this volcano.
