Situated on Barrie's scenic waterfront , is the metal art piece "the Spirit Catcher". Created by artist Ron Baird for EXPO '86 where the theme was transportation and communication. The Spirit Catcher is modeled after the thunderbird, a spiritual messenger who carries our dreams and desires to the creator. The sculpture, which weighs in at 20 tonne, took 6 months to create and was originally installed in Vancouver for the EXPO and later purchased and donated to the Barrie Gallery Project by the Helen McCrea Peacock Foundation. The Spirit Catcher was the first piece in the permanent collection and is still to this day the largest piece in the MacLaren Art Centre. The Spirit Catcher is a piece of iconic metal art for the city of Barrie Ontario.
