The historic building known as the Samuel Steele Memorial Building was built in 1894 and is a famous landmark that showed respect to a well known member of the Northwest Mounted Police. The Northwest Mounted Police were members of the police force before it was changed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Since 1999, the Memorial Building became home to the Orillia Art and History Museum and later in 2004, the building had necessary construction work done with many restorations to the building. The museum is a non-profit charitable organization that has many exhibits of art and history relating to regional and national significance.

Throughout the building you will find many collections, some which include photographs, archival materials, paintings, farming equipment and interesting books on the history of Orillia, Ontario. Many educational groups come to the museum for programs with teachers and classrooms.

The Orillia Art and History Museum located in downtown Orillia, better known as the Samuel Steele Memorial Building is open year round for visitors to tour. On Mondays and Sundays the museum remains closed but the doors are open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday with longer hours throughout the summer months.
