A branch of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea is almost completely enclosed by land with only a relatively small opening of 14km between Spain and Africa called the Strait of Gibraltar. It is also connected to the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea on its eastern shores.
The Mediterranean Sea was a crucial key to the development of the today's modern societies. It served as an important body of water for merchants and travellers as a highway, which allowed for the all important trade as well as colonization and war, and cultural exchanges.
