San Gimignano is a town located in the province of Siena, in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is most famous for its medieval architecture, notably its tall towers. In recent years it has sometimes been referred to as a medieval Manhattan and attracts vast numbers of tourists each year.
The town has been placed on the list as one of the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites to protect the medieval architecture and towers of the town.
UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Founded in 1945, the main goal of UNESCO is to promote...
... international co-operation among its 193 Member States, in the fields of Education, Science and Culture and Communication.
UNESCO chooses World Heritage Sites, which they claim as belonging to all the world's people, regardless of where they are actually located. A heritage site can be anything from a forest, to a desert, or a city, and is chosen because it represents a part of the human races' history, and one that needs to be preserved for the advancement of humanity. A few examples of some famous World Heritage Sites include The Statue of Liberty in New York and Venice and its Lagoon in Italy.
