The medieval city wall that surrounds the ancient city of Avignon in the Vaucluse region of Provence, France took almost eleven years to build, from 1359 to 1370. This was not the first wall to be built around Avignon, because the Romans built walls which are now under the paved streets of Avignon today.
Pope Innocent VI commissioned the city wall in Avignon in Provence, France to be built with 8 gates and 39 towers, although it is said the medieval city wall, which is 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) in length, was built without slits in the parapets for soldiers to shoot their arrows.
During the time the Popes were ruling from Avignon (1309 to 1377) the city flourished, and there were more than 100 chapels and churches contained...
... within the city wall. Today many of these buildings have been converted to shops.
The medieval city wall of Avignon, France was restored in the 19th century, and there are museums of interest to all within the wall.
