There are many stops along the Southern Scenic Route on the South Island of New Zealand but the Matai Falls is a beautiful area that one should see. The Matai falls are easily reached on a fifteen minute walk from the carpark on the south side of Table Hill and the hike is on the easier scale which makes it ideal for people of all ages.
As you pass through the native trees of the forest, you will come to a cliff where the Matai Falls drops for about fifteen meters. The falls flow over the cliff and appear to be in tiers as they cascade down the rocky banks to the pool below.
On sunny New Zealand days, the sun sparkles through the forest and highlights the greenery that grows along and under the Matai Falls. It is best to reach this part of the South Island before the afternoon as the dew still glistens from the morning dampness and the rays from the sun reflect off the Matai Falls.
The longer that you can stay in the Catlins on the South Island of New Zealand, the better, as you will find that the Matai Falls are one of many in the area. After viewing these falls, head up the trail a little further where you will find the Horseshoe Falls that flow from heights of about ten meters. Both of these falls are set up perfectly for pictures and are a beautiful scenic part of the Southern Scenic Route of New Zealand.
