Maruia Falls is a glorious site. As can be seen the waterfall is wide, powerful and dominate the landscape of the river. The falls are the main attraction on the river and they are located about 22 km south of the town of Murchison. The water in this area is clear and clean and almost untouched by human interaction.
These falls were created in an earthquake in 1929 that struck the area. When the earthquake originally hit, it dislodged the river bed at the lower part of the river by less than a full metre. However, over time, erosion and subsidence caused the bed that had been dislodged to...
... keep moving downwards and over time the waterfall rose to its current height of about 10 metres.
The nearby town of Murchison is known as the 'Whitewater' capital of New Zealand, as the area around it has some of the best Whitewater rafting locations in the whole country.
