This type of marmot is known as the Alpine Marmot and is the largest of the squirrel family where it likes to reside at an altitude of 1000 to 3200 meters in the mountain passes in South Tyrol, Italy. The color of the hair on a marmot can vary from gray to a yellowish brown except for the end of their tails which are black. They have small round ears, extremely strong legs and large blunt nails that they use for digging their burrows.
A marmot will find a mate at approximately three years of age and stay with them for their entire lifetime. The female marmot has about 2-8 babies each summer which would be the perfect time for a hike in the Dolomite Range in Italy, Europe to take a family picture of the marmots.
