Maori Carving Rotorua

An artist is deep in concentration as he chisels a carving at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua, New Zealand.

share to Facebook The New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute is situated in Rotorua on the North Island of New Zealand. The carving school first began operations in 1967 and some of the students from those days are now the teachers themselves. The institute not only teaches students the art of carving but also teaches them that they are responsible for keeping the Maori culture alive. The Rotorua based Institute has up to 12 students who are taught the traditional methods of carving for 3 years.

Visitors to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute can talk with the students about their carving during a tour of the facility.
