The name Manitoulin means Spirit Island and is a sacred place for the native people of the area. Manitoulin Island has many freshwater lakes as well as three rivers which provide spawning grounds for trout and Atlantic Salmon. The island itself is a continuation of the Niagara Escarpment which runs south to the Niagara Falls and into New York.
