Information about the "Lyttelton New Zealand" photograph:

Lyttelton, New Zealand is a port town close to Banks Peninsula on the South Island of New Zealand where about 3,000 people reside. From Christchurch, New Zealand it is a twelve kilometer drive but you can also board the train that links Lyttelton to Christchurch as this port serves Christchurch.

Over 700 years ago, the town of Lyttelton was home to the Maori people and the earliest trace of any human life goes back to the year of 1250. Lyttelton, New Zealand was officially announced as a port in 1849 and was named after George William Lyttelton.

The harbour of Lyttelton, New Zealand was formed due to a volcanic crater that collapsed and was socked in by two islands known as Quail Island and Ripapa Island. Quail Island was once used as a leper colony and animal quarantine station.

Across the way sits Diamond Harbour which is easy to get to as a ferry that has been going since 1888 connects the two harbours. The ferry runs all day on a regular schedule and the trip is approximately eight minutes long.

Around Banks Peninsula, New Zealand there are many interesting places to visit and explore and a good starting point is Lyttelton.
