Beautiful pink Chilean Flamingos are extremely graceful birds that can be viewed at the L Oceanografic in Valencia, Spain. The outside of the L Oceanografic is very elegant with many islands and masses of rocks where the Chilean Flamingos, pelicans, ibises, turtles and other fascinating creatures spend their days.
These beautiful birds usually grow to be about four to five feet tall and weigh approximately 15 pounds. In the wild the Chilean Flamingos feed on small crustacean algae and single cell organisms but in the zoo or at the L Oceanografic in Valencia, Spain they are fed a watery mixture of grain, chicken mash, dog food and vitamins. The extraordinary pink coloring comes from a pigment in the tiny animals that they consume but in captivity the Chilean Flamingos have an additive in their food that keeps their pinkish hue.
The Chilean Flamingos are similar to other species except their plumage is a brighter color of pink, their long thin legs are grey with pink feet and knees and their bill has a larger area covered by black.
The Chilean Flamingos are close to becoming an endangered species and many locations like the L Oceanografic in Valencia and other zoos around the world partake in a breeding program to ensure that the Chilean Flamingos are here to stay.
