During the Cannes Film Festival the Old Port of Cannes on the Cote d'Azur in Provence, France is full of luxury yachts, owned by the rich and famous, trying to moor closest to the Film Festival Hall. In contrast, the every day kind of boats, travelling to and from St Tropez, can be found at the Laubeuf quay on the far side of the Old Port.
Le Suquet is the 'old town' of Cannes in Provence, and overlooks the west side of the Old Port. It takes about a 15 minute walk to reach Le Suquet from the port, the narrow streets wind upward to the hilltop where the view of La Croisette is quite spectacular.
The hill, which is also called Le Suquet, became the property of the monks of Iles de Lerins in the 11th century, and the castle of Cannes that was built by the abbot in 1088 still stands today. Originally, Le Suquet, Cannes on the Cote d'Azur was a poor district, but nowadays the little cafes and restaurants along the narrow streets are quite upscale and expensive.
