As you wander along the Bush Walk on your way to the well known Four Sisters that reside in the Waipoua Forest on the North Island of New Zealand, you will cross paths with some very large Kauri trees. Standing below the Kauri trees, you look way up into the white clouds above and you will be able to visualize where the tops of these trees end.

Some of the large Kauri trees can grow up to fifty meters tall and they tower way above the rest of the forest growth. They are considered to be one of the most ancient trees throughout the world and are only found in the northern districts on the North Island of New Zealand.

When the Kauri trees start out as young plants, they grow straight upwards and as they mature, their lower...

... branches fall off. When looking from below at these large Kauri trees, that is why the branches do not start until they hit the crown of the tree towering above everything else.

Some of the large trees around the North Island of New Zealand are known to be around 2,000 years old as they take a very long time to reach their maximum height. Their trunks can grow to be five meters around with the leaves that adorn the top of the large tree, being three to seven centimeters in length.

Kauri trees are beautiful and the best place to view these fascinating trees is in the Waipoua Forest on the North Island. The Bush Walk where these Kauri trees are found is on the way to the Waipoua Forest and the walking trails are easy to handle for just about anyone. Simple walks to some of New Zealand's giants, is well worth the trip and time while on the North Island.
