Lake Minnewanka in the Banff National Park of Alberta has been the site of human activity for more than 10,000 years and was once known as "Lake of the Water Spirits" by the Stoney People, and "Devil's Lake" by early Europeans.
Up until 1895, this glacial lake remained unaltered by man, however during 1895 the first dam was constructed to enable easier landing for boats. Since then, two more new dams have been constructed for hydro electricity.
During the summer months Lake Minnewanka is a hive of tourist activity with boat tours, hiking, fishing, scuba diving, picnicking and camping.
