Santa Maria della Salute also known as La Salute, the Church of the Virgin Mary of Good Health, in Venice, Italy was built because of a promise. A plague broke out in Venice in 1575, striking down a third of the population and the Senate prayed to the Virgin Mary and promised if Venice was spared from the plague a church would be built to honour her. The plague waned and the first stone was laid in 1631.
'La Salute' as it is called by the people of Venice, Italy is located where the Grand Canal flows into the lagoon near Piazza San Marco.
The design of Santa Maria della Salute was the brainchild of architect Baldasarre Longhena who was only 32 years old. He envisioned an octagonal white temple, a huge cupola with baroque decorations and a facade in Palladian-style.
For a memorable sight, Santa Maria della Salute or La Salute should be seen in the moonlight from the Accademia Bridge, although other visitors may prefer a sunrise view from the Piazetta.
