Santa Maria della Salute also known as La Salute, the Church of the Virgin Mary of Good Health, in Venice, Italy was built because of a promise. A plague broke out in Venice in 1575, striking down a third of the population and the Senate prayed to the Virgin Mary and promised if Venice was spared from the plague a church would be built to honour her. The plague waned and the first stone was laid in 1631.
