Information about the "La Lonja De La Seda Valencia Spain" photograph:

La Lonja de la Seda or the Silk Exchange is on the Plaza de Mercado in the city of Valencia in Spain. In 1996 it was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is one of the most interesting places to visit when in Valencia.

Built in the 15th century, La Lonja, as it is known to the Valencia residents, is considered to be one of the best buildings of the 'Golden Age' of Valencia, when Ferdinand 1 became a patron of the Arts.

The Gothic style building was constructed to be a sea-trading consulate with monies provided by the merchants of Valencia. La Lonja design was along the same lines as a building in Palma de Mallorca, but the trade hall and tower was not finished until 1498. The construction was finally completed in 1533.

These days La Lonja de la Seda is the home of the Cultural Academy of Valencia, but over the years, since the end of the 15th century it has been a oil market, silk exchange, a centre of commerce and in the 19th century when a cholera epidemic overtook Valencia La Lonja de la Seda became a temporary hospital.
