The original Kingston Flyer Steam Train was a passenger service steam train that operated between Kingston and Gore on the South Island of New Zealand from 1878 to the mid 1950's. Today the Kingston Flyer operates on a fourteen kilometer stretch of track with 120 years of history. It consists of two AB Pacific Class Steam locomotives that were built in New Zealand. One is an AB 795 dating 1927 which was a former Royal Train locomotive and the other is an AB 778 dating 1925 with seven steam-heated wooden vintage carriages dating back to 1898.
The Kingston Flyer Steam Train runs two daily excursions between Kingston and Fairlight where you can enjoy a one way trip or a return adventure. Both stations offer a souvenir shop, toilets, recreational areas, fishing but the Kingston station also has a 9-hole golf course and bowling green as well as motels and a holiday park.
The ideal journey would be to travel to Kingston, check out the town for the night and travel back the next day or simply enjoy the 1.5 hour round trip. You get taken back into the luxury of a bygone era where you can relax and take in the beautiful scenery of the New Zealand landscape.
The Kingston Steam Train is a great way to see the sights of Central Otago, New Zealand while you sip on a complimentary beverage and listen to music from the 1920's.
