A fishing boat enjoys the trip home as sunset illuminates the sky over Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia and a pod of Killer Whales leisurely surfaces in front of them. The calm waters around the sunset hours make it very easy to spot Killer Whales if they are in the vicinity, as the blows can be heard for quite a distance and the dorsal fins are easily seen. The mist from their blows lingers overhead when the wind is calm and the light at sunset reflects off their massive black and white bodies.
Summer and Fall are the best times of the year off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia as the salmon are running and the Killer Whales linger around the area. Each fishing boat heads out on a daily basis in hope of a good catch and the whales get their fill on all the salmon making their way through these waters.
The Northern Resident Killer Whales do not seem to be to affected by the fishing boats, pleasure crafts, cruise ships or ferries that travel these waters. Each captain of any type of boat is advised of the rule that should be adhered to when the Killer Whales are around and that is to stay at least 100 meters away from any of the pods. On occasion, the Killer Whales will approach the boat while idling in the water, but that is something the whales choose to do, not something that humans inflict.
Some fishermen believe that where there is a pod of Killer Whales, then that is where the fish will be, while other boats stay as far away from the whales as possible as their chances lessen as the fish are being eaten. Everyday is a different adventure in the waters off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia for both a fishing boat and the Killer Whales.
