Killer Whales Boat Traffic Northern Vancouver Island: Scientific Name:
Orcinus orca
Ongoing research is being done off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, to see how the boat traffic, (barges, tugs, cruise ships, pleasure crafts and fishing boats), affect the Killer Whales which visit the area every summer. This is the time of the year when these waterways are the busiest, but the Killer Whales still return to Johnstone Strait and the surrounding area year after year.
As the sunset lighting reflects a pinkish hue off the water, a male Killer Whale begins to dip below the surface to catch up with the rest of his family members. The barge slowly passes by and the Killer Whale keeps enough distance between himself and the barge as the day nears its end. The majority of the boat traffic have returned to their home base and the waters off Northern Vancouver Island become fairly quiet until the first morning light.
Killer Whales off Northern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, Orcas at sunset
Boat traffic is very common around the Northern end of Vancouver Island in British Columbia but while passing this barge, this Killer Whale and many other pods of whales seem to peacefully continue on their way.
