A baby killer whale is called a calf and is approximately 8 feet long at birth and weighs between 300 to 400 pounds. After the calf is born the mother will help the baby to the surface to get its first breath of air. The calf will nurse for about the first 12 months of its life and during this time the mom also teaches it to find and catch food on its own.
This particular pair of killer whales are known as Northern...
... Resident Killer Whales and are usually seen off Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia on whale watching trips from July to October each year. There is nothing more delightful to see than a baby killer whale splashing and playing by its mother.
