Information about the "Killam Brothers Building Yarmouth Nova Scotia" photograph:

The red and white building in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia was originally constructed in 1835 and is among the oldest shipping offices throughout Canada that was owned by the Killam Brothers. The Killam family began a business in 1788 with a twenty-eight foot schooner and they become one of the first known ship builders in Yarmouth.

From this building, the Killam Brothers created a business of selling supplies to sailing ships and they had their own fleet which travelled between ports carrying cargo. Over one hundred years, the Killam family had an interest in over two hundred sailing ships which kept their business alive.

Their sailing business ceased around 1900 as steamships were the new type of water vessel and they were becoming the more popular type of ship each day. This is when the Killam family switched their business over to coal, gas, oil and insurance. After two hundred and three years of service to the community in 1991 and five generations, the last family member in the Killam business decided it was time to retire.

Today, the Killam Brothers building was donated to the Yarmouth County Historical Society and visitors can tour through the building when visiting Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to get a real glimpse of past history. In this building there are models of ships that date back to 1861 and exhibits of the way life was in another century of long ago.
