Considered a landmark of Bohemia, the Karlstein Castle is one of the most admired sights in the region. The settlement of Karlstein lies in a deep valley at the base of a hill which the castle sits atop while surrounded by hills.
The present district of Karlstein is formed by several communities and villages which lie along both banks of the River Berounka and surrounding valleys. When construction of the Karlstein Castle began, Charles IV of Bohemia created a great deal of ceremony by inviting the archbishop of Prague (his friend and counsel) to lay the foundation stone on the 10th June 1348.
Charles IV was the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the King of Bohemia.
