Dawson Falls was discovered in 1885 by Thomas Dawson, an Egmont National Park explorer, and he decided to clear an area close to the falls for a camping area. A lodge was opened in 1896 but in 1889, Thomas Dawson was proclaimed dead after drowning in the Wanganui River.
