A leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement was Jon Sigurdsson and a statue in his memory stands on the grounds of the Legislative Building in the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jon Sigurdsson was born in the Westfjords of Iceland in 1811 where he resided until 1833 when he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark.
This is where he attended university to study grammar and history but he also worked at the Arnamagnaean Collection where he became an expert on Icelandic history and sagas and university fell behind. He became a major role player in the discussions of the old Icelandic parliament as an advisory body in 1843 and was later elected for its first session in 1845. ... trade and later modernized agriculture and fishing was put in place. In 1874, he was a major influence of a constitution where Iceland gained control of its finances and legislative power which they shared with the Danish crown.
