... of San Gimignano once had 72 towers standing. They were not only a symbol of wealth for the various families that built them, but were also used as lookout towers for the approaching enemy and as stations for which to pour boiling oil on the enemys' heads. Once the town was hit by the plague in the 14th century, most of the towers fell down due to lack of upkeep and events such as natural disasters.
Since it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is protected by the World Heritage Programme as a city that holds an important place in the preservation of humanity.
