Inukshuk Inuit Symbol Hudson Bay Sunset Churchill

Along the shore of the Hudson Bay in Churchill, Manitoba at sunset, an Inukshuk has been built which is a symbol to the Inuit people. An Inukshuk was once, and in some instances today, an important landmark to the lives of many travelers.

In the past, and still regularly seen in the town of Churchill along the shores of the Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada, an Inukshuk has been created which is illuminated by the sunset lighting. Inuit people used Inukshuks as a traditional method of marking their path along the barren tundra and harsh, frozen shorelines.

In Churchill or in other Arctic areas in Canada, no natural landmarks can be found for miles and the rock figures will have arms or legs which lead people to safe areas or good fishing spots. There is no set pattern in which an Inukshuk should be built. It can be a single rock or a lot of rocks balanced on top of each other to make the shape of a figure. Back at the start of the 19th century, many Inuit people made Inukshuks with arms, legs and even a layer of hair which was collected from plants.
