Il Redentore or the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer on the island La Giudecca in Venice, Italy was the first church to be built for the end of the plague which struck down 50,000 people of Venice in 1575. Santa Maria della Salute was the second one built.
The Capucin friars of La Giudecci donated their services and the land as long as the church was built in a simple style that befitted the lifestyle of the monks.
Andrea Palladio designed Il Redentore with a high dome, two slender bell towers, and an elegant staircase up to the entrance. To appease the monks, who thought the design was too elaborate, Palladio used white stucco and white Istrian stone for the exterior.
For years, the Doge would make a pilgrimage to Il Redenotre, on La Giudecca in Venice every third weekend in July to give thanks for the end of the plague. Nowadays it is the Festa del Redentore, a time for fireworks and feasting.
