The white-walled Iglesia de Santa Maria, in the town of Sorbas, Province of Almeria in Andalusia, Spain stands out against the beautiful blue Spanish sky. When the Christians were fighting the Moors in the 1400s, there were many revolutions, but, finally, after nearly 100 years the Catholic (Christian) armies won. The Moors surrendered all control, and vacated Sorbos leaving the town with little population to carry on business. People from nearby areas were persuaded (with free houses) to re-establish Sorbas, and needed a new church.
The 16th century Church of Santa Maria (aka Iglesia de Santa Maria) was built on the site of an old mosque, with the nave finished in Mudejas woodwork (an Iberian style of decoration). The gable ends...
... are late 18th century, the door 19th century, while the interesting white bell-tower has Saints Roque, San Jose, Peter and Paul at each corner.
