Set amongst the beauty of Prince Edward Island in Cavendish, the House of Green Gables stands as part of the Lucy Maud Montgomery's Cavendish National Historical Site which became famous after Lucy Montgomery wrote Anne of Green Gables in 1908. The setting of the book was based around Green Gables and the house since then has a been a popular tourist attraction for visitors to PEI.
Since 1937, this house has been recognized and maintained to perfection as it is considered a magical place where Lucy Montgomery spent many years as a child. The gardens with flowers that bloom every year are well kept and the grounds are nicely manicured.
When you enter the House of Green Gables there is large entranceway with a staircase to the right and a parlour to the left. In the back corner is the dining room and straight ahead from the entranceway is Matthew's room, but if you make a right before the room you will enter the kitchen. Off the kitchen is the dairy porch, pantry and back porch. On the upper floor of the house you will find Annie's room and Marilla's room along with a sewing room, guest room and a room for the hired help.
When visiting Cavendish, PEI be sure to stop by Prince Edward National Park and see Green Gables where you can tour the house, trails, farmyards and visit the gift shop. On special occasions there are events that Parks Canada takes part in such as a festival in August, a haunted Halloween excursion, a Green Gables Christmas and a winter day of sleigh riding, tobogganing and cross country skiing.
