Information about the "Historic House Kaikoura" photograph:

The Fyffe House in Kaikoura on the South Island of New Zealand is the oldest house in the region and is surrounded by historic landscape. The area of Kaikoura around this historic house is filled with tales of when the Maori people were the first to settle here and build their own village.

The original section of the house is the end that is single storied and sits atop whale bone vertebrae foundations. Robert Fyfe was the original owner of this historic house who for a living, made barrels to transport whale oil.

The whaling station was built behind the Fyffe House in 1842 which Robert owned and operated as they slaughtered Southern Right and Humpback whales. He passed away in 1854 and his cousin took over the whaling station business and took care of the farmland. The area was soon wiped free of whales and they soon became solely sheep farmers and fishing experts.

Cousin George made some additions and renovations to the original house which he completed in the early years of the 1860's and to this day it remains in its original form. The New Zealand Historic Places Trust took over this historic house and now the public can tour through it.

Be sure to check out all the places around the Fyffe House in Kaikoura, New Zealand as the stories of the sea wall, hotel, wharf, stores and whale bones areas take you back to the historic days in Kaikoura.
