The mechanism for the clock was made in London by the House of Vulliamy, who were noted and trusted clock makers in Europe. The clock chimes on the hour...

... and every quarter of an hour and the fact that the clock is still working is a example to how well the mechanism was built in the first place.

When it was first built, the clock was a guard room and residence for a caretaker that lived on the grounds, but that position was dissolved in 1965. The clock tower is now taken care of by Parks Canada, and the staff still winds the clock twice a week so as not to put too much pressure on the old mechanism. The outside was restored in 1990 to bring out its original Georgian style and the tower will be maintained for years to come to showcase Halifax's past.
