A historic landmark in Bonavista in Newfoundland Labrador is the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse. It was built and put into operation in 1843 and became a National Historic Site in August of 1978.
The rough seas off of the coast of Newfoundland can be an extremely treacherous area and the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse has guided and saved many mariners over its years of operation. Constructed of wood, this two storey structure is erected around a stone tower where the lantern is situated.
The first light was working in September of 1843 and was then replaced in 1895 with one that flashed two white lights and then one red one. It could be seen for approximately thirty miles but it too was replaced in 1962 by an electric light. In 1966, the light was placed on a tower outside of the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse and the light that was used in 1895 was returned to its original location inside.
Visitors to the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse in Newfoundland Labrador can journey through the building which was restored to the 1870 years. The second floor of the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse is where you will find all the historic information on the keepers and the lighthouse.
