A few mishaps have taken place since the opening of the Hartland Covered Bridge such as spans being swept away by ice in 1920 forcing the government to repair it and cover the bridge and a car rammed into the west end of the bridge in 1982 which called for major repairs. Lights were installed on the inside of the Hartland Covered Bridge in 1924, a sidewalk was added in 1945 and by 1980 it was declared a national historic site.
