The design of the Halifax city hall building is along the Second Empire style of architecture (a style also known as Napolean III) by architect Edward Elliot, a native to the city. Halifax City Hall is situated in the Grand Parade, an elegant and historic square at the centre of downtown which was used for military parades.
The City Hall building was designated a National Historic Site in 1997 as one of Nova Scotia's oldest and largest public buildings.
