Gulf St Lawrence: Scientific Name:
Phoca groenlandica
An aerial picture of a harp seal haul out on the pack ice on the Gulf of St Lawrence. Pregnant females haul out onto the ice floes around late February, early March to give birth to their young several days later. The females return regularly to the icy whelping patch for 2 weeks following the birth of their pups to feed them on their rich milk. Once the females have finished nursing their pups they leave them and are then courted by the males waiting nearby.
