The Verdon River is a fairly large river in itself, even though it is a tributary of the much larger Durance River in south-eastern France. It is about 166 kilometres long, and its source is at an altitude of 2400 metres, high up in the famous Alps mountain range.

The most famous part of the Verdon River run is this part in the photograph here, which is known as the Verdon Canyon or the Verdon Gorge (Canyon du Verdon), and is thought to be the most beautiful in all of Europe. It is about 700 metres deep, 25 kilometres in length and is the second largest in the world. The walls of the gorge are composed of limestone, which give it that layered look, and they are a green colour due to the vibrant colour of the Verdon River, which is named for the colour green.
