Information about the "Grand Bank Fishing Boats Newfoundland" photograph:

Grand Bank is a unique fishing community located on the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada. It is very likely that fishing boats entered this town as early as 1640 and fishing has remained a great part of the livelihood of Grand Bank, Newfoundland ever since.

Cod was the main catch for the fishermen in the early years and there was so much of it that people built themselves bigger schooners. The harbour of Grand Bank would fill up everyday with fishing boats as a majority of the fish were caught right in the harbour.

Grand Bank, Newfoundland soon became a well known fishing community and boats would venture for miles to these waters. Soon fishing became the local trade and it was then shipped overseas for profit. For many years the schooners trolled the waters near Grand Bank until a fish processing plant was built in 1955. Trawlers then replaced the schooners and fishermen spent many hours out in the waters for the daily catch.

When visiting Grand Bank, Newfoundland today, you will still find many types of fishing boats in the harbour. Some of them are simply for pleasure while others still head out everyday in search of different types of shellfish.
