The village of Gourdon, perched high in the Alpes Maritimes, has been called one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France and visitors to this picturesque little place would probably agree. At the entrance to Gourdon in Provence, France there are many shops on the main street, little boutiques tempting tourists with perfumes, soaps, blown-glass, tasty breads and souvenirs.
In the past, a Roman gate defended the only entrance to Gourdon in Provence, and to the north were high walls barring the only vulnerable point of the village.
The Chateau de Gourdon was originally built in the 9th century and later rebuilt in the 16th century. It was opened to the public in 1950, and in 1971 was designated as a historical monument. The Chateau also is home to a Medieval Museum and a Museum of Decorative Arts.
