Information about the "Francois Xavier Garneau Quebec City" photograph:

Under the deep blue sky above a park near Porte Saint-Louis in Quebec City, Canada is a statue in memory of Francois Xavier Garneau. Garneau was born in 1809 and died in 1866 but during his life he was a poet, civil servant and liberal who wrote a book relating to the history of the French Canadian nation.

The History of Canada was the only book which Francois Xavier Garneau wrote but it was a three volume book which took about three years to complete in 1848. Garneau was a brilliant student in school, who flourished in history and by the age of twelve he moved to another school where he became an instructor after two years.

After school, he became a notary which took five years to achieve, and then he had a yearning to travel the old world. When returning in 1831, Francois Xavier Garneau was offered a job as secretary to Denis-Benjamin Viger where he learned a great deal until he decided to return home to Quebec City in 1832. He began writing poetry, returned to the notary business and then in 1837, Garneau was confirmed as a French-Canadian historian.

This quaint park in Quebec City is a beautiful place to go for a stroll on a summer day or an ideal place to enjoy a picnic lunch. The statue of Francois Xavier Garneau gives parents a chance to teach their children a small part of Canadian history while enjoying the fresh air in the park.
