The fortress village of Berdun is only 688 meters above sea level and situated at the beginning of the Valle de Anso in the Pyrenees foothills in the Huesca region of Aragon, Spain. During the Roman times the little settlement was called Vidibunum which was a derivation of the Latin 'viro' meaning village and 'dunum' or fortress, and over the years the name became Berdun.
Near the border of Navarre and Aragon, Berdun in Aragon was quite an important fortress village during the Middle Ages. Berdun is also located on the Camino de Santiago, the mediaeval pilgrimage route walked by the Bishop of Le Puy in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to honour the relics of St. James, a distance of 1600 kilometers.
These days, Berdun in the Huesca province of Aragon, Spain still has a medieval air, the houses are set out in an oval, as if they were protecting themselves from the enemy. The village looks out over the lovely Aragon Valley with the stone buildings giving the feel of dependability.
Although Berdun is not a very large village it is well equipped to accommodate visitors with hotels, restaurants and shops, and the peaceful atmosphere is ideal for a vacation to unwind from the stress of life today.
