Before this bridge was built in 1868, the people that lived in the surrounding areas always complained to their local mayor and council that the various parts of the city were not easily accessible and that the only bridge that did exist at that time was in...
... disrepair. However, the council was concerned that a new bridge would cost too much.
The public got together however, with the local merchants, and formed a group to raise money to build the Iron Bridge. They managed to raise the funds and their bridge was built and stands to this day. When it was first opened the people who wanted to cross it had to pay a toll - however that is thankfully not the case today.
