Robert Lawson, one of New Zealand's most eminent architects of the 19th century, won a competition to design the new cathedral style Presbyterian church - to be called the First Church of Otago in the expanding city of Dunedin in 1862.
He had designed a building of Gothic architectural style influenced by many buildings being built in the northern hemisphere in Europe at the time. While the exterior of the building is an elaborate and extravagant show of multi-pinnacled towers and spires, the interior is far more conservative - and better suited to the likings of the Presbyterian congregation.
The interior of the First Church of Otago features a...
... pitched wooden ceiling which contrasts against the vaulted ceilings being installed in churches during that era (the late 1800's). Above the pulpit is a beautiful stained glass rose window which is flanked by other stained glass windows. A set of twin organ pipes frame a Proscenium situated behind the stone pulpit.

In stark contrast to its exterior design, the interior of the First Church of Otago is more along the lines of Colonial styling. This grand church is situated in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand and was designed by NZ's most eminent architect RA Lawson.
