Female Killer Whale Northern Vancouver Island Summer: Scientific Name:
Orcinus orca
The summer months and the first month of fall are the best times to visit Northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada as the Killer Whales are scouting the area for salmon. This lonely female Killer Whale has her own plans as she surfaces in the summer sunlight, giving passengers aboard the whale watching boat a close look and a prime opportunity to capture her picture.
A female Killer Whale is the matriarch of a pod of Killer Whales and when they separate for feeding, she will call and they will regroup. The matriarch occasionally needs to remind some of her family members of her dominance and her vocals or tail slapping will become very aggressive. There have been reports of a female head butting, jaw snapping, biting or raking other members of her pod to ensure that they know who is control of this family unit.
