The famous Moustiers faience pottery can be found in many little pottery shops in the village of Moustiers Ste Marie in the Alpes de Haute region of Provence, France. Moustiers faience pottery is very colourful and decorated by hand just as it was in the Middle Ages.
Moustiers Ste Marie in Provence became famous for faience pottery after a family by the name of Clerissy moved to the village from Marseille in the late 1600s and began to use many colours (polychrome) on the faience. In the 18th century Moustiers faience pottery became a 'hot item' for the rich and famous tables of France and many pottery workshops were established in Moustiers Ste Marie.
Although the faience industry in Moustiers declined during the 19th century in 1925 there was a rebirth and today Moustiers faience pottery is flourishing. There are about 20 workshops (ateliers) around Moustiers Ste Marie in Provence and the little shops that sell the delightful Moustiers faience pottery are friendly and professionally run.
