These pictures are of some of the most rare creatures on the planet. Thousands of animals are threatened or endangered worldwide, and many more vulnerable to extinction. Species are disappearing from every continent. There is no time like the present to get to know these animals and they role they play in the global ecosystem.
The list is not discriminatory- land reptiles, marine mammals, birds, insects, and everything in between- the overwhelming cause of animal population decline is human intervention.
The New Zealand Kaka bird is a red parrot that lives on the North and South Islands. The National Wildlife Center is breeding these birds in captivity to reintroduce them to the wild.
Other animals are not so lucky. Fin whales, humpback whales, and sperm whales, to list a few photographed here, are at the mercy of ocean pollutants. These gentle giants may one day be gone from our oceans for good.
